The Moat Club Update - 4th January 2012

'Eden'

Rehearsals are well under way for the next Moat Club production ‘Eden’ by Eugene O’Brien, which runs from 21st – 25th February (note the dates printed in the Moat Theatre calendar/website are wrong). This multi-award winning Irish two-hander stars Brendan Farrell and Sarah Gallagher and is directed by Paul O’Brien and Eilish Rafferty.

April Play – ‘Easter 1917’

A further reminder about the auditions for the April play, which take place on 23rd January at 8pm. We’ll be looking for a large number of cast and crew and it should be a really fun show to be involved in.

Front of House - Sundays

At least two members are needed immediately to join the Sunday Front of House rota. At present, there are only two members on the list for Sundays so if either of those are not available there is an issue. Any members who have not signed up for front of house on a Sunday, and would be in a position to do so, please get in touch with me.

Artistic Committee Call for Submissions - Message from John Lennon

Please be advised that the Artistic Committee are now seeking submissions from directors interested in directing a play in the October slot or Panto in December.

We would be delighted to hear from anyone who is interested in directing. We need to hear from people by 12th January 2012. Please email or phone me at the address below.

If people are interested in directing one act plays rather than full length plays they can advise me of same.

I am happy to discuss with anyone who wishes to do so.

Please contact me at johnswlennon@hotmail.com or on 086 - 1754624.

General Members’ Meeting

You may recall from the AGM last September that the club’s financial situation was perilous. At the AGM, it was agreed that the Finance Committee would report on their activities after Christmas to the wider club membership. With this in mind, a General Meeting of Members has been convened for Tuesday 7th February at 8pm.

It is important that you attend this meeting if at all possible.

Please note that only paid up members (as of the start of the meeting) will be permitted to speak or vote at the meeting.

‘Cinderella’ at the Moat Theatre

Best of luck to all involved in Brian Brady Youth Theatre’s pantomime ‘Cinderella’ which features a number of Moat members, colleagues and friends. Finishes this weekend.

Naas Comedy Club - Kavanagh’s

Our friends in Kavanagh’s will host the next instalment of Chris O’Neill’s (Naas Film Club) comedy night on Wednesday 18th January. Congratulations to our own Johnny Mooney who made a very successful comedy debut last time out in front of many Moat members. Doors open at 8.30pm and the comedy kicks off at 9pm, admission costs €5.

The Moat Club Update - 10th January 2012

Artistic Committee Call for Submissions

Reminder that the artistic committee are looking for submissions from interested parties for the October slot (full length or one-acts) and the Pantomime. Plenty of members have expressed interest in the past in directing a play with the club, so this is your chance to make it happen. It's hard work but very rewarding and enjoyable! If you are interested, please contact John Lennon (johnswlennon@hotmail.com) immediately.

Dates for your Diary

Please contact me if you would like any more information on the play, parts, etc and I can answer any questions you have or send on scripts, etc. It would also be an ideal chance for new members too so if you are new to the club and looking to get involved, or if you have friends interested in coming on board, please come along on the night.

Play Reading Group

We are going to be restarting the play reading group this month, with a plan to hold one reading per month. The first play up is Arthur Miller’s “The Crucible” which we will be reading on Sunday 22nd January at 7pm. This classic of theatre is set among the Salem witch trials of the 1690s and its dramatic portrayal of the effects of mass hysteria was an allegory for the anti-communist witchhunts of 1950s America. The Moat Club's production of the play won the All-Ireland Drama Festival in 1979.

After that, the dates planned are: February 12th, March 19th, April 22nd, May 27th, June 24th. Plays for each will be announced nearer the time.

Sunday Front of House Team

Further to last week's request for additional team members for Sunday's front of house rota, the following dates in particular still need additional volunteers. If you can do FOH on any of January 29th, February 5th, March 25th please let me know.

The launch night for our 2012 programme will take place on Wednesday February 15th from 7.30pm. Our programme for the year will be launched by Eugene O’Brien, author of the hit RTE series ‘Pure Mule’ and of the February play ‘Eden’. There will also be an opportunity to see an extract from Eden and to hear from the directors of the various plays planned throughout the year. All members are welcome on the night and it also serves as a kind of open night to showcase ourselves to patrons, the public, and prospective new members. Some help will be needed both in preparing for and on the night itself as detailed below, and if you are able to help, you should contact any of the PR Team : Pat Keaveny (patkeaveny@gmail.com), Una Gribben (una.gribben@diageo.com), Eilish Rafferty (eilishr@hotmail.com), Johnny Mooney(john.mooney@dfa.ie) or myself.

Help required with
· Food preparation on the night (say from 6/6.30pm)

· Setting up theatre (all day Wednesday 15th or indeed Sunday 12th, Monday 13th or Tuesday 14th as there's nothing on except our get-in – subject to member availability).

· Need volunteers from membership to man the stands on the night: costume, make-up, stage management, set design/building, directing, acting, lighting/sound

The Moat Club Update - 24th January 2012

Easter 1917 Auditions

Thanks to everyone who auditioned for the April production last night. There are a couple of people who couldn’t make last night that I will be seeing during the week so it’s not too late if you still want to come on board. Just get in touch with me by email or on 0874137471.

Launch of Calendar of Events for 2012

As noted last week, the launch of the calendar of events will take place on February 15th and there has been a small response so far from members willing and able to help with the set up and the night itself. If you can lend a few hours of your time, please get in touch with one of the PR team or myself. It is usually a great night for the club – socially, and in terms of promoting ourselves to our patrons, new members and the wider public, with displays on our various activities, insights into the plays planned for the year, extracts from upcoming productions, and this year Eugene O’Brien, author of Eden, has kindly agreed to officially launch our programme.

Eden – Set Build

A reminder about the set build for ‘Eden’ - which will take place over the weekend of 11th, 12th Feb and volunteers are needed to help out. Carpentry skills largely in demand. If you can help, you should contact Eilish or Paul.

Eden – Wrap Party

Will take place after the final performance of the show (25th February) in Kavanagh's where there will be some platters of their excellent food. More details again, closer to the time.

Social Event – Charades Night

The social committee have organised a charades night for members on Tuesday 31st January in the Moat foyer at 7.30pm. If you remember the heyday of 'Play the Game' on RTE, or even if you don't! then this night is for you! Teams will be arranged (you can come as a team already if you like or they will be sorted on the night) and while we may not have Twink or Ronan Collins, there will be "experts" on hand to remind you of all the signs, signals, do's and don'ts in case you've forgotten how to mime "Three words", "two syllables" or "a little word" in trying to communicate your play, film, person, book, song or whatever! There will be a few nibbles sorted and you can bring your own drinks to what promises to be a fantastic fun night, full of laughs and amazing mime skills! Also, as it takes place in the theatre, it's suitable for those members who don't like (or Junior members not allowed to!) all the social events happening in the pub.

Dates for your Diary

Tuesday 7th February 8pm. Moat Theatre. – General Members’ Meeting: Update from Finance Committee. Note: Only paid up members entitled to vote/speak at the meeting.

Postering – Naas and surrounds

If you are able to assist the PR team with postering our shows in some of the towns surrounding Naas, please get in touch with Johnny Mooney (John.Mooney@dfa.ie or 0861607018). The team generally have Naas itself covered but the likes of Edenderry, Caragh, Sallins, Kilcullen, Prosperous, Straffan, Maynooth, Kill, Johnstown, Kildare, Newbridge, Rathcoole and so on are well within our catchment area and if you live or work in any of these and could stick a couple of posters up for our shows it would be of great help.

Membership Subs/Cards

An updated list of club members (a total of 80 members as of today) has been posted in the rehearsal room. If you have paid your sub, and not yet collected your membership card, these are available for collection in the Theatre Box Office.

New Plays

We received an email from “Plays for Adults” (www.playsfordadults.com) – a number of new plays have been added to their library for 2012 (both full and one acts). Interested directors could peruse the site and might find something they would like to direct.

Weekly Updates

If you have anything you would like included in the weekly emails, please let me know. In general they are sent on a Tuesday, so please send me content by the Monday evening if possible. In general, I try to only send the one email a week, so unless it is a time sensitive request (i.e. pertaining to something occuring before the next update will be sent), mails I receive after the update goes out will only be included in the next week's email.

The Moat Club Update - 30th January 2012

Eden

There will be a free excerpt from ‘Eden’ performed this Thursday (2nd February) in Kavanagh’s at 9.45pm. The cast and crew would really appreciate your support – it would be great to have as many members as possible there to add to the audience to give the actors a real sense of performing it to a big house. It should be good night too – it’s free, and Kavanagh’s have said they will be also be providing some complimentary tapas!
